Wavel Ramkalawan is an Anglican priest who entered politics when a multiparty system was reintroduced in Seychelles in 1993. He won a seat in parliament that year, and as leader of the United Opposition (later renamed the Seychelles National Party, or SNP), he successfully retained his seat in 1998 elections. He lost a 2001 presidential bid to incumbent France Albert René. Ramkalawan remains the leader of the opposition.
