Period: 1934–
Soyinka was educated in London, which contributed to his unique style of writing that fuses Western and tribal traditions. After founding a theater company in Nigeria, he was imprisoned for two years because of his activism. He continued writing works that highlighted problems in Africa. In 1986 he became the first African to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature for his body of works.
