Yolande Mukagasana survived the 1994 genocide, but her life was drastically changed by it. Before the war, she had been a nurse and the head of a private healthcare center. But after her husband and three children were killed, she moved to Europe and began writing about her experiences and those of other survivors. Her works include the books Death Doesn't Want Me and Don't Be Afraid to Know.
