Souley is considered to be Niger’s first professional actress. She began acting in 1966 and continued—despite lack of monetary support—for decades. She is credited with opening the way for future actors and filmmakers to make a living at their work, even though during her early career she often worked without being paid. She is now outspoken about the rights of professional actors.
