The oil obtained from the plant is an active local stimulant that is used in the treatment of respiratory catarrhs as a local application or for gargles. It is also used as an inhalant in diphtheria. In India the leaves are also used as a counter-irritant to suppress the secretion of milk in mammary abscesses.
