When your co-workers come to work or your organization’s members come to a committee meeting, do they know why they are there? What is the mission of your organization – why do you exist?
The first component of a strategic model is to define the company’s mission. The mission of a company is the unique purpose that sets you apart from other companies in similar industry and identifies the scope of the company’s operations. In short, the mission describes the companies product, market, and technological areas of emphasis in a way that reflects the values and priorities of the strategic decision makers.
Many organizations have lengthy mission statements that may confuse rather than clearly define and direct the organization. Consider drafting a short purpose statement for your group. A great example is the purpose stated by Disney – “To make people happy”. What is your purpose?
